TEACHERS ON LEAVE ARE 3 PER CENT OF TOTAL.
The percentage of Canterbury school teachers who -were on leave last month was about 3.33. The Canterbury Education Board has about 1590 teachers on its list, exclusive of some 400 students. Last month thirty-eight were absent for more than a week, and fifteen for periods of less than a week. Some of these teachers, mainl}*- sanatorium cases, have been on leave for twelve months. As the returns are compiled each month an annual total based on monthly figures cites these teachers twelve tijnes. One or two are in England on exchange. Sickness was mainly responsible for the absence of those on leave for less than a week. The 1590 teachers employed by the board include 170 head masters, 219 sole charge teachers, 715 assistants, 91 probationers, and 50 needlework teachers.
