UNEMPLOYED MEN ARE GRATEFUL TO CATERERS.

The action of those responsible for the catering at the Masonic Grand Lodge ceremony on Wednesday night in sending to the Returned Soldiers’ Association club rooms a large case of sandwiches that were left over was much appreciated by the unemployed men who called at the club rooms yesterday morning. Mr E. F. Willcox, secretary of the association, said that one of the lodges had promised to send its surplus refreshments to the club rooms every month, and its thoughtful action helped to make things a little more cheerful for some of the men who were having a very hard run of luck at present. The association’s benevolent fund, he said, was down to a very low ebb, and seemed likely to be exhausted in the near future. The Poppy Day funds had also been used up, excepting for about £SO, which would be expended before Christmas in order to give work to a number of the men. The daily number of callers at the office in search of employment was between eighty and a hundred.
