TROTTING IN DUNEDIN

Eight Canterbury Winners

(Special to the “ Star.”) DUNEDIN, November 27. THE -weather _was tine but cold for the opening of the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting, and there was a large attendance. Rain earlier in the week left the track heavy, but it improved with the racing. The totalisator investments were £17,133, compared with £24,321 on the corresponding day last year.

The South Canterbury trotter, 1 Wally Bingen, was favourite for the Roslyn Handicap, and when the field settled down Great Glee was in charge of the favourite, with Welcome Guy in third place. As the race progressed the trio drew further a wav. In the straight, Kennerley, who was trailing Great Glee came out and seemed to interfere with Wally Bingen. Once clear. Welcome Guy came fast, but could not quite reach Great Glee, who won by a narrow margin. Hydro was some distance away fourth. Biddy Parrish broke up badly at the start and Merrijigs mixed his gait soon after the start. It was only a contest between the first three horses after the first furlong. Great Chenault Unfortunate. Black Watch was favourite for the Progressive Handicap, but made a faulty beginning, _as did Ballade, i-’.rama Harvester and Great Chenault. Madam Locanda led the field in the early stages, but was finished with at the end of a mile and n. quarter. Herod, who won, did not have too good a run in the early stages, but finished up well after covering a lot of ground. Pekara went a bad race and did not show much speed at any stage. Sunny Morn was always well placed and finished up in third place. Willie Derby was not on his best behaviour and failed to go at all steadily. Location was pacing solidly till the straight was reached, when she stopped badly. Great Chenault, after a very bad beginning put in a fine run and was going fast in the straight when he was driven to a break and finished fourth. Had he gone oft right he would have been hard to beat. Madam Locanda showed a let of speed for a mile. An Uninteresting Race. There was only an acceptance of seven for the mile saddle event, and as two were scratched, it made a one dividend race. It was one of the worst contests ever seen on the course. Brook Pointer, who was second favourite, went away with a big lead, followed by Mac Dillon, who was favourite, while Liberal was in third place. The other two in the race were easily beaten. At the end of five furlongs Mac Dillon broke and made it easier for the leader, who won by four lengths, whilst the third horse was twelve lengths away. Unless these races are better patronised by owners in future, there is every chance of them being deleted from future programmes. No interest was taken in the event; which was devoid of all excitement. Red Shadow's Easy Win. Red Shadow won the Spring Handicap with ease. He was favourite for the event and went to the front about three furlongs from home and won easily. Erin's Chance was prominent early, but was done with at the end of half the distance. Radio too, went a great race for a mile. When a round was covered. Red Shadow commenced his run and from this point the issue was never afterwards in doubt. Real Girl was on her best behaviour and paced solidly all the way. Danny Boy and Awa-iti did not go away right. Automatic made a good begining, but was beaten before a mile was covered. Stella Bingen finished fast and was going on very well in the concluding stages. Holly Bank, who was well backed, was slow away but quickly got into a good position and paced solidly till a little less than a furlong from home, when he broke up. Sunranes, who was thought to be hard to beat, came on well at the end and got fourth place.

Narrow Victory for Avenger. Avenger won the President’s Handicap by the narrowest of margins. He made a smart beginning and for a mile and a half was up in the front, but here he dropped back and lost several lengths. Rounding the turn into the straight he was several lengths away, but he made a desperate rush and just caught Grand Light, who paced a fine race. John Noble paced much better than he did at Addington, as he was always up with the front division and _ finished third. Morning Sun was a disappointment as he was particularly well placed all the race, but lacked stamina at the finish. Sunny Bob went a long way below his showing at Addington, and did not seem able to muster up much speed. Wrackeen and Arikitoa both went off wrong, and trailed the field throughout. Steel All had every chance, but he broke under pressure at the finish. Erin’s Fortune did not pace evenly in the race, and her speed was not in evidence. Great Logan met with interference at the start owing to Arikitoa breaking, and this spoilt any chance he may have possessed. Muriel de Oro is not racing m her best form at present. Favourite Easily Beaten. Stanley T. was a hot favourite .for the Dominion Handicap, but he went away galloping, although not losing much ground. Fifa and Ambition were the early leaders, but both stopped in the last quarter of a mile. White Satin was trotting in her best form throughout and Stanley T took charge when the straight was reached. He made a great dash coming into the straight and appeared to have the race in safe keeping when Surprise Journey put in a great dash and won rather easily at the finish. Stanley T. went to a break at the finish when hard pressed. Len Wood broke soon after the start and was never in the picture. Trampcrisp trotted a solid race, but stopped in the final quarter, and Nelson’s Boy, who went steadily all the way, was also tiring at the end. Good Race and Fine Finish. There was a fine contest for the Caversham Handicap, and a good finish. Alva Lass led till the entrance to the straight, where she had finished her rim and Roddy took charge. In a final dash. Sodium, who had a good passage all the way, stayed just long enough to beat the fast finishing Kelp, who was favourite. George Ray and Lily Harold did not begin right. St George went a sound race all the way and was third. The race called for a lot of expert driving and D. Withers on Sodium was seen to advantage, as he availed himself of every opening, and this gave him the victory. Lady Antrim was pacing well for a mile and a quarter. Kelp was driven a bad race as he kept to the rails too long and there was no opening till too late to have a chance. Delightful Stays Well. There was a good field for the Dash Handicap. Delightful, who was favourite, followed John Jinks in the early stages, but took charge along the back the last time, and staying on well, had a length in his favour at the finish. John Jinks went away well and had every chance, but he stopped at the end and finished fourth. Nelson de Oro was always prominent and finished well. Sunchild and Talent went away badly. Proud Dillon, who raced well at Addington, went a sound race throughout. El Direct and Jolly Chimes failed in the final stages. Free Advice made a slow beginning, but along the back put up a fast run which however, she failed to maintain.
