Girls* Friendly Society. A meeting of the council of the Girls’ Friendly Society was held in the hostel recently. Miss Bromley Cocks, the president, welcomed Mrs West-Watson home from her trip to England. At the conclusion of the business part of the meeting, Mrs West-Watson gave a brief account of her trip, dwelling chiefly on her visit to Townsend House in London, a fine building built by the society in memory of the founder, Mrs Mary Townsend. Mrs West-Watson described the board-room, ‘ library and offices, but was particularly struck with the invalid members’ needlework department, where a band of honorary workers was busy cutting out and preparing needlework of all descriptions for invalids. Although Mrs West-Wat-son did not see the Princess Mary caravan, she visited the Lady Cunliffe camping place in a beautiful part of Surrey. Here members from all parts of England mav enjoy a cheap, restful and beneficial holiday. She also saw some of the fine work being done by the society in America. A vote of thanks was accorded Mrs West-Watson. It was announced that, through the kindness of the Bishop and Mrs WestWatson, a festival would be held at Bishopscourt on Saturday, December 13, when town members and their mothers and as many as possible from country branches would be present. Women’s Division, Farmers’ Union. The Christchurch branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union held its last meeting of the year on Wednesday afternoon. The chief business concerned the “bring-and-buy” sale held in October, the result of which was most gratifying. Farm and dairy produce of highest quality and home-made cakes were given in generous measure and were deservedly popular. A vote of thanks was passed to all those who had contributed to the success of the venture —sister branches of the Women’s Division, town and country friends who brought and bought or helped in any way. and especially to Mrs Rolleston, who opened the sale. The branch is now in a position to send its contribution to the “Community Chest,” upon which depends the housekeepers’ scheme The next meeting will be held on February 25. 1931. Christchurch W.C.T.U. The fortnightly meeting of the Christchurch branch of the W.C.T.U. was held on Wednesday Miss Henderson (president) was in the chair. A vote of sympathy was passed to Mr E A. M Leaver in the loss of his wife, who was an enthusiastic and energetic member of the North Brighton Union. A vote of sympathy was also passed to Miss W. Trevurza, the hon secretary of the Ashburton Union, in the loss of her sister. Mrs Derby was elected to represent the union at the meetings of the committee for the welfare of the patients in the Sanatoria. It was decided that a bring and buy sale be held after the annual meeting, in aid of the funds. Miss Henderson gave an address on the pioneer work done by members of the New Zealand Unions from the first meetings held in 1885 under the presidency of Mrs Mary Levatt. Mrs Pedler announced that the Jubilee Home tea would be held on a Saturday afternoon

early in December. St Saviour’s Market. The final meeting of stallholders and helpers was held yesterday afternoon, in connection with the above market, held at the end of last month, when the creditable sum of £1376 Is 7d was raised to assist the funds of St Saviour’s Homes. The total takings for the three days at the market amounted to £1136 Is 7d, the expenses for same being £46 8s 2d, and the street collection £303 4s sd, with expenses amounting to £8 12s 3d, leaving a total net profit for the two of £1376 Is 7d. The chairman, Mr H. G. Livingstone, stated . that the council wished to express its thanks and appreciation to all those who had assisted in any way to help make the market s ch a tremendous success.
