LITTLE INTEREST IN TRAMWAY POLL

OVER 60,000 PERSONS ARE ELIGIBLE TO VOTE. Very little interest appeared to be taken in the Tramway Board election this morning, the polling being even lighter than was expected. It is pro bable, however, that before the close of the poll at 7 p.m., a good deal more interest will be shown and that the voting will at least be equal to that at the election three years ago, when approximately one-fifth of the electors recorded their votes. All the arrangements for the poll are working smoothly, according to the returning officer (Mr Frank Thompson;. There is a total of ninety-five polling places, and in the central sub-district, for which five members are to be elected, there are 35,377 electors enrolled, and in the four suburban subdistricts the number of voters is 26.614, making a total of 61,991. Both the Citizens’ Association and the Labour Party are fairly well organised and have a number of motor-cars in use for taking people to the polling booths. The result of the election will be announced at the office of the Tramway Board to-night. It is expected that it will be available before ten o’clock.
