TOMATO GROWERS URGE RETENTION OF DUTY.
A protest against the action of the Government in reducing the import duty on tomato pulp was voiced by a deputation from the Canterbury Fruit and Tomato Growers’ Association to the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association last night. The deputation endeavoured to enlist the assistance of the Manufacturers’ Association in the master, and were assured by Mr I. Woolf, president, that that help would be given. The deputation included Messrs 11. T. Falla, C. E. Pope and H. Firman. “ Our present difficulty is in connection with tomato.pulp,” said*Mr Falla. “ The matter is vital to tomato growers. The Government has reduced the : duty on imported tomato pulp from 100 per cent to 21 per cent. There is no need for tomato pulp to be import- . ed. We ask that you give us your support in this matter.” Mr Pope said that tomatoes for pulp < would be sold at £6 a ton thougli they cost £lO per ton to produce.
