ROUND THE SUBURBS

Sumner Water Supply. The Sumner Borough Council recently had good reason to investigate the capacity of the borough water supply. It was found that between midnight and five in the morning no less than seventy thousand gallons were being used. Obviously, with dry weather and a prospective borough garden competition, the precious liquid was being used at the rate of from 12,000 to 14,000 gallons an hour, while most people were asleep. Arrangements are being made to bring' offenders to book. Redcliffs Croquet Club. The Redcliffs Croquet Club continued their series of flag five hundred evenings on Tuesday at the Arcade, Redcliffs. There was a good attendance, and a pleasant evening was spent. The prizes were, won by. Messrs D. Coleman and ! Gillies and Miss Jean Coleman. Consolation awards went to Mr and Mrs Simpson and Mr Nevin. Bituminised Test Section. Good progress is being made with the bituminising of the test section allotted to British Pavements, Ltd., on Hills Road, just past Hackthorne Road. The plant has been busy and already a fair area has been laid. Waltham School Carnival. •The wind-up of the Waltham School Queen Carnival will take place on Saturday afternoon, when a fair will be held in the school grounds. Sideshows and stalls will be provided, and the proceeds will swell the generaf fund. The crowning ceremony is to take place on December 9.

Waltham School Dance. A carnival dance was held last evening in the Sydenham Football Hall, the proceeds to assist the Standard VI. Queen at the Waltham School Carnival. The foxtrot competition was won by Miss Carrick and Mr Cashmere, and the waltzing competition by Mrs Moore and Mr Harley. The Monte Carlo and lucky spot were won by Miss Mavis Osborne and Mr H. Ashby, and Miss M’Queen and Mr Clarkson respectively. Mr H. Ashby’s and Mr L. O’Laughlin’s band supplied the music for dancing. Among those present were:—Mesdames Carrington, R. There is still another amount * to come in which will bring it up to 3 £lO. This, for an almost informal afternoon, was very good. Next week, a special effort is being arranged, and t this evening the same funds are to . be augmented by a concert to be given t by Miss Edmond’s pupils. Aranui “Y” Branch. A meeting of the Aranui “Y” Branch was held at the residence of Mrs MTlroy last Tuesday, Mr R. Holmes , presiding over an attendance of seven--1 teen. Miss P. MTlroy was elected ’ Evangelistic Superintendent and Mr G. ; Empson assistant Parliamentarian. In- ‘ vitations to socials to be held at Belfast and Rugby Street Hall were ac- ’ cepted. Arrangements were made for : two members to correspond with a “Y” Branch in the United States, and also one in South Africa. Papanui Train Signals. At the Hare wood railway crossing, near the Papanui Station last night, the new warning signals flashed out for a quarter of an hour while a train shunted in the yard. This is very dangerous, for the traffic came to the crossing and, after waiting and finding -the engine at a distance, crossed the line. Herein lies the danger. If the warning lights are going to flash when there is no train approaching, then the signal . will be ignored and sooner or later lives will be lost. Progress League Soeial. The last social of the year of the 1 Papanui Progress League was held last evening. A novelty was the fact that everything was run by the ladies. This suited the men, for they were freed from supplying the door-keepers and providing for the supper, but it came hard on them in that they were not allowed to seek partners for the dances and had to wait till they were asked. Some of the male wall-flowers learned a lesson—what it feels like to sit huddled neglectedly in a corner and try to look happy. Mr F. Comyns provided the music for the dancing and Mr Burrows played an extra. Songs were given by Mr O. M. Jones and Mr Jock Lockhart and a, violin solo by Mr Davidson. Mrs Jones, and Mrs S. H. Cox played accompaniments. Mrs Moffatt was M.C. *: Sydenham Scouts. The recently-formed Sydenham Scout Troop is gathering new members every meeting, and the membership now totals about twenty. A concert was held last evening in aid of the funds in the St Saviour’s H&ll, the programme being supplied by Mr Charles Buckett’s pupils. There was an excellent attendance and it is expected that the funds will benefit considerably. Cashmere School Concert. A concert will be given to-morrow 1 night in the Masonic Hall, Cashmere, in aid of the school prize and picnic fund. The programme will be provided by the school pupils and will include singing, dancing and a playlet. The programme will be presented again on Saturday evening. 3 © m s m © ® in is is m si m m ® m m m ® m m
