A total of 61,261 tons increase in the trade of the port of Wellington, or 2.8 per cent, during the year ended September 30 was reported to the Harbour Board by the general manager last night. In view of the conditions existing in the second half of the year, the total trade was very satisfactory, he said, but it might be expected that there would be a marked decrease in the present year unless prices improved. General goods imports decreased from 627.948 tons to 560,886, or 10.7 per cent. Nearly the whole of the decrease occurred in the second half of the year. General cargo exports were 244,981 tons, an increase of 19,738. The bulk of the increase was to English and foreign ports. Wool outwards decreased by 34,265 bales, caused by the large quantity of wqol held back last season. Timber imported decreased by 3,693,741 super feet to 28,315,247 super feet. There was an increase of 55,326 tons of bulk oil to 365,775 tons. The oil transhipped was 38,010 tons. The total tonnage of all classes of cargo handled was 1,163,804 tons.
