OFFER FOR RELIEF OF UNEMPLOYMENT

MEN MAY EARN A FEW POUNDS FOR CHRISTMAS. Per. Press Association WELLINGTON, November 26. In order that the unemployed, especially married men, may be able to earn a few pounds for Christmas and thus afford some immediate relief the Unemplo}'ment Board has agreed to offer an amount up to £25,000 by way of subsidies to the following bodies where unemployment is acute:—City councils, borough councils, county councils, town boards, drainage boards, river boards, road boards, education boards, school committees and hospital boards. The following are the conditions:— Terms of Offer. (1) £2 for £1 on estimated cost, including materials suitable for relief works. (2) The works to be either of a capital nature or special maintenance works. (3) The works shall contain at least 50 per cent of labour based on wages at the rate of 14s a day. (4) Pa>'ment of subsidy for labour shall be limited to wages at the rate of 14s a day r and transport used on the works. (5) No subsidy to be pa>*able on supervision, overhead, etc. (6) Proposals to be approved b\* the Public -Works district engineer before the work is commenced. (7) Subsidy to be limited to expendittire incurred up to and including January 31, 1931. (8) Labour to be engaged through Government Labour Bureaux. Not a Precedent. (9) Local bodies to be notified that this is a special offer which is being made to relieve distress this Christmas and not to be regarded as establishing a precedent. Applications should be made promptly to the board through Public Works engineers in the respective districts, accompanied by a description of the work and estimate of the cost, with labour and material shown separately. The number of men to be employed on the work should be stated.
