DOMINION LACKS NATIONAL MIND.

MR JOHN FULLER URGES LESS IMPERIALISM. “ Less Imperialism and more New Zealandism would be good for New Zealand.” Giving utterance to this slogan when interviewed last night, Mr John Fuller, a of the FullerHay ward theatrical interests, who is visiting Christchurch, stated that blind Imperialism reacted against New Zealanders, who were often induced to take less than a fifty-fifty bargain when trading with England. “ New Zealanders,” Mr Fuller said, “ lack a national mind. They don’t stand up and demand attention. They have given. England a film quota largely ©ut of a spirit of Imperialism, but they have not asked for a quota in exchange. They have not demanded a modified quota on their staple products, yet that would be a fair bargain. Much of England’s trade goes out of the Empire because of monetary interests which she has to keep alive in foreign countries. New Zealand’s trade products could go begging if England found that to protect financial interests outside the Empire she was forced to offer preference to those foreign nations where so much of her money is invested. “ It is because so much of England’s money is invested outside the Empire that the complex difficulties surrounding trade have occurred,” said Mr Fuller. “ England has to open her markets to the Argentine and other large nations because of her interests there, and in offering a market to those countries she is forced to limit her dealings with the nations within the Empire. Trade within the Empire is a common slogan, but I think that a better one would be, 4 Invest and trade within the Empire/ Referring to Australia’s position today, Mr Fuller said that unemployment in that country was directly due to an exaggerated value of the worker by the Arbitration Court. Shortened hours and recuperative breaks were extended to employees on too big a scale, resulting in a huge economic waste. The employer was forced to put a percentage of his hands off and cpuld make no provision for the future. His efforts were directed now to saving further losses.;
