INTOXICATED DRIVER GETS LIGHT PENALTY.
(Special to the “Star.”) AUCKLAND, November 25. At the Onehunga Police Court yesterday, before Messrs D. A. Sutherland, J.P., and T. H. Geraghty, J.P., M. Thurlev pleaded guilty to being intoxicated while in charge of a motor lorry in Queen Street at Onehunga. Sergeant D. J. O'Neill stated that the accused pulled his lorry up in front of the National Bank in Queen Street, Onehunga, last Saturday evening. Constable R. Wilks, observing his condition, stepped on to the lorry when it started again, and ordered the driver to stop, which he did after going a few yards. Thurley was then locked up, and was released later oil bail. J. J. Sullivan pleaded for the accused that he had only been using the lorry for a fortnight, and that it had been purchased for him by his wife to give him a start in business. He asked the Bench not to touch the license, but to prohibit accused for twelve months. The Bench adopted the suggestion, and accused was convicted and discharged.
