Wing-Commander S. Grant-Dalton was a passenger from the north this morning. A Wellington message says that Mr Oscar Garden was entertained at morning tea in Parliament Buildings by members of Cabinet to-day. Sister Glenn, of the Kaikoura Hospital, has taken up a post as nurse with the Wharanui Railway Camp, and her post in the hospital has been filled by Miss Smith. It was mentioned at this morning’ meeting of the North Canterbury llos pital Board that Staff Nurse Fishei had been granted eight months’ leave to enable her to take widwifery train ing. Nurse Margaret Barnett has been released from duty for eighteen months, so that she may go to England to take a post-graduate course. Messrs W. H. Nankervis (Wellington), W. M’Kenzie Jeffrey (Auckland), A. Ibbotson and D. D. King (Dunedin), I. Morling (Napier) and M. M. Kaisse (Chicago) are guests at the United Service Hotel. Messrs N. R. Bain (Wanganui), L. J. Thompson (Hurvterville), A. B. Moffat (Invercargill), R. J. Foss and L. J. Hunter (Levin), Legay Holthouse and H. C. Murray (Wellington) are staying at Warner’s Hotel. Mr E. C. Sutcliffe, secretary of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners, left for Wellington last night to attend a meeting of the National Council of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners. Mr W. Stewart, Commissioner for Crown Lands, is in South Canterbury with one of the local committees, in connection with valuations. He is expected to return to Christchurch towards the end of the week. Mr L. B. Hart, who has been ill recently, was welcomed at last night’s meeting of the committee of the Canterbury Horticultural Society by the chairman (Mr O. W. B. Anderson), who expressed pleasure that Mr Hart was sufficiently recovered to be able to be present. Messrs E. E. ITicks, W. Petty, R. S. Milson, E. lies, E. B. Paton and W. E. Cathie (Wellington), A. M. Mason (Pahiatua), John Scott (Lake Tekapo), IT. Hart (Masterton), F. W. Sutton, C. H. Bowman and E. H. Carrel (Hawera) and A. J. Pople (Auckland) are recent arrivals at the Clarendon Hotel. Dr R. IT. Stewart, of Dublin, has been appointed Medical Registrar for the Christchurch Hospital. The post was advertised throughout New Zealand and in London. It was reported at this morning’s meeting of the North Canterbury Hospital Board that five applications had been received and submitted to the Director-General of Health in accordance with the regulations. The Hospital Committee favoured the appointment of Dr Stewart and the recommendation had been approved by the Director-General. Mr R. Clarke, secretary of the Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade, has received a letter from Mr T. J. .Watts, secretary of the United Fire Brigade Association, Auckland. “I feel that I would not be doing my duty if I let the occasion pass without paying some tribute to the work of our esteemed old comrade, Superintendent J. Carter, who has just completed thirty-eight years' service to your brigade,” he states. “I would be gratified if you will convey to him the appreciation of the association for his valuable services in connection with the bi-annual demonstrations. On behalf of the executive members of the association and brigades in general, I wish Superintendent Carter long life and prosperity in his retirement. One can truly say, m conclusion, ‘w r ell done thou good and faithful servant.’ Wish him every success from his comrades of the United Fire Brigades’ Association.”
