LOW PRICES RULE AT FIRST WOOL SALE IN AUCKLAND
Growers Get Poor Returns For Best Lines; Inferior Grades Not Wanted.
Per Press Association.
Tun,-,, vr.nr. , ,, _ AUCKLAND, November 25. HREE \ LARS AGO, at llie first wool sale of the New Zealand series, the opening bid for a line of good crossbred fieece was 17d. This morning, the equivalent was sid, at a sale where 20,300 bales were catalogued (including about 5000 of last season’s).
As far as the sale has proceeded the only demand is for better class crossbred hoggets, for which there was a fair inquiry at 5d to 6d only. Fleeces were bringing only 4d to ”sd. Lambs’ wool was comparatively neglected, and seeded lines brought only Id to 2d. There were similar bids for necks, bellies and pieces, so that it may be said that such oddments were practically thrown away. The top price up till 1 p.m. was 7£d for a line of half-bred super. Most of the buying has been done on behalf
of Germany. With one or two exceptions, Bradford is not in the market. which is taken to indicate that, low as the prices are, they are still above Bradford’s idea of value. The quality of the clip was much on a par with previous years. Some good clips failed to realise their value through growers neglecting to skirt properly and take out the bellies. It is expected that the sale will be completed in time for buyers to leave for Wanganui to-night, the second sale or the series taking place there on Friday.
