TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 1930. CHANGING STANDARDS.

A FINAL WARNING to motorists was issued by Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., yesterday, when he announced that in every case of intoxication or drunkenness in charge of a car he would cancel the license without exception. Mr Mosley’s views have undergone a remarkable modification in the last three years. We quote from a statement made by him on October 30, 1927, as follows: Yesterday I sent a man to gaol for a month for driving a car when he was drunk. The Court will have to send these men to gaol right away. We cannot have the public endangered by them. We simply cannot have it. It cannot possibly be allowed to continue. The only course will be to send them all to goal. Day after day, men are charged with having been intoxicated while in charge of cars. I have done my best to warn them. Why a man in charge of a car should take any liquor whatever I don’t understand. It's beyond me. And now I issue a further warning, and I hope the newspapers -will take it up. I am seriously considering sending all intoxicated motorists to gaol. We are inclined to agree with the Mr Mosley of 1927 rather than the Mr Mosley of 1930. The proper penalty for any man who is drunk in charge of a car is imprisonment, as w4ll as loss of license, and the newspapers who supported Mr Mosley’s good resolution of three years ago would do so again to-day if he could bring his determination to the sticking point.
