MARRIED WOMAN FACES S.M. ON THEFT CHARGE. On a charge of stealing two dresses, valued at £3, Marjorie Mary Ellen Griffin, a married woman, of River Road, appeared before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court this morning. The accused pleaded guilty, and was convicted and admitted to probation for two years. Chief-Detective Carroll said that the woman was at one time employed by the complainant, and while there sWe the dresses. She was twenty-tour years old, and married. She had two children. The goods had been recovered, but were not now fit for use. The Canterbury College Board of Governors decided yesterday to thank L)r David Miller, of the Cawthron Institute, for the assistance rendered in the appointment of an entomologist for the college by interviewing applicants in England/ and also for his offer to give all the help possible to Mr Morrison, who is to fill the position. Complimentary references to the manner in which Mr W. Hayward, chairman, had conducted its affairs, were passed by members of the Christchurch Tramway Board at yesterday’s meeting. Mr Hayward, in responding, thanked members for their co-operation and expressed his appreciation of the ability and loyalty of the general manager (Mr Frank Thompson). Reference to the death of Professor R. J. Scott was made at the meeting of the Board of Governors of Canterbury College held yesterday afternoon. The chairman, the Hon G. J. Smith. M.L.C., moved the following resolution which was carried: “That the board records its regret at the death of Robert Julian Scott, Professor Emeritus of Canterbury College, who was for nearly thirty-six years professor in charge and director of the School of Engineering, and who by his initiative, enthusiasm, powers of administration and organisation raised the school to a high state of efficiency. Further that the sympathy of the board be expressed to his relatives in their bereavement.”
