FROM THE “ STAR ” SIXTY YEARS AGO,

ADVERTISEMENTS AND NEWS OF NOV. 24, 1870. The Northern Railway—-The works in connection with the northern line of railway are being pushed forward at a satisfactory rate. The fencing is now completed to the Fendal Town Road—a distance of about two miles —and the formation of the line has also made good headway. A depot for materials to be used in the construction of the line has been established a short distance from the Addington junction, and the rails are laid down, so that the materials may be unladen on the spot. It is generally understood that about three months from the present time will see the railway open as far as Papanui. Fire at Kaiapoi—At 9.15 this morning a fire broke out in an outbuilding adjoining the Pier Hotel. The Fire Brigade turned out with remarkable promptness, aqd under the efficient command of their captain succeeded in extinguishing the fire before it reached the main building. In this they were very materially assisted by Constable Quinn, who, at very great persona] risk, rushed in and pulled down a partition which connected the two buildings, and it was in great measure due to his gallant conduct that the fire was so soon got under.

As a result of a decision reached at last night's meeting of the City Council, the license for a libarding at the corner of Oak Street and Ferry Road, Woolston, which has been under discussion for several weeks, will not be renewed when it expires at the end of* the present year. A bride came all the way from San Francisco to be married here so that she could ride in New Zealand’s best Bridal Car. Surclv this speaks for itI self. So 'phone 34-075 or 35-572 for the Gold Band Taxis Bridal Cars. Thank l you. 2
