The secretary of the New Zealand Hospital Boards Association (Mr E. Cannons) made the following statement to-day in regard to a recent judgment of the Supreme Court as to compensation granted in accident cases and payment of hospital accounts. “The returns from a number of hospital boards reveal considerable losses on account of hospital fees for accident cases including, unfortunately, fees incurred by persons without dependents, able but unwilling to pay. Unpaid hospital accounts for the past year of persons without dependents who were well able but unwilling to meet their obligations out of insurance moneys received vary in amount from £2OO in the case of smaller hospitals to over £IOOO in the case of larger hospitals. 1 Hospital Boards’ Powers. “Hospital boards have no power to enforce payment of hospital fees from insurance moneys and usually solelv depend on the kind offices of those solicitors handling the insurance moneys, which offices are highly appreciated by the boards concerned. Representations have been made to the Government to have hospital fees paid out of insurance where such payment would not inflict hardship, but this has not been taken up by the Government except as provided under the Workers’ Compensation Amendment Act (dropped at the end of last session), -whereby the medical allowance under the Act was to be increased from £1 to £25, out of which hospital fees at a rate per week were to be paid direct to the hospital concerned. “Despite the co-operation of solicitors in effecting settlement of hospital claims,” he concludes, “many claims do not come under their control. Considerable losses 'are incurred by hospital boards and some further protection such ns that mentioned by Mr Justice Reed or such as could be provided by legislation appears to be desirable.” In a judgment, part of which related to the sum of £37 16s claimed as hospital expenses, his Honor Mr Justice Reed said in the Supreme Court at Wellington last week that it had been represented to him that in a large number of cases where hospital damages had been awarded, the plaintiff, a ftcr collecting, had appropriated the
