Training operations at Riccarton this morning did not provide much excitement. The outside of the trial' grass track was open, but it was not in great request, and of the horses who went on it few were stretched out in anything like serious work, though a number did useful sprinting tasks. sjc As is usual at this period of the year, facilities are offering at Riccarton now for reverse work, for the benefit of trainers who contemplate sending teams to Auckland. P. V. Mason worked some of his horses the reverse way, and A. M’Aulay also exercised Nightmarch, but their tasks were of an easy character on the sand track. Other trainers with the Auckland trip in view will avail themselves of the opportunity for reverse work later. * *• * * Mr A. Louisson, the owner of Night- 1 march, was a visitor to Riccarton this morning. He has presented an enlarged photograph of his crack to adorn the walls of the trainers’ room. It is an excellent likeness of the Nightraid horse, and it has been hung in the centre of the main wall, making a welcome addition to the interesting collection of horses from Riccarton stables who have raced well in recent years. * * * * Fresh Breeze (I. Tilson) was schooled over three hurdles this morning, and gave a. very attractive exhibition of jumping. He should be seen to advantage in hurdle races later in the season. * * * * Decisive, a three-year-old gelding by Winning Hit from Border Maid, by Sanquhar from Jeopardy, has arrived at Riccarton and has joined Cutts brothers’ team. He is owned by Mr G. R. Macdonald, of North Canterbury. * * * The four-year-old, General Assembly, by Paper Money from Lady Voilet. has been purchased by Messrs Webb and Hunter, and he will join H. Donovan's stable at Riccarton. sfc ijC T. 11. Glllett has Count Cavour and his three-year-pld brother, Gustavo, working along" Steadily. Provided they go on all right, they will be raced at the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting. The Humbug horse, Decoy Bird, who was training on nicely wtih 11. Donovan’s team, has broken down. As he is seven years old, this may mean the end of his racing. b m m Hi in m m m ® m m u s m ®hj m 11 e

13 m m m ® m s m m m m in m ® ® m s m u e A. E. Wormald has a couple of additions to his team, one is the jumper, Sea Boy, and the other is a four-year-old mare by Gav Lad from Nita. The Boniform mare Bonrose, who has been spelling for several months, has joined S. Barr's team. When formerly in training she showed great promise, and if she trains on all right she should win good races later in the season. R. W. King has Aberfeldy moving along in useful work, and expects to have him racing during the approaching holidays. The two-year-olds in his team are spelling at present, and they will not be raced again ’until the autumn. The five-year-old mare, Valpine, by Valkyrian from Red .Pine, has joined j. W. Jennings’s team, having been leased i by a patron of his stable. T. Lloyd is giving most of his team useful work at present. Gay Crest, Desert Song and Royal Baby have been nominated for the Woodville meeting, where they may be raced prior to tackling more important North Island engagements during the holidays. The death of T. J. Daly, which is reported from Wellington, occurred with great suddenness. He was present at the recent meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club, where he raced Lady Pam and other members of Mr W. R. Kernball’s team. The summer meeting of the Ashburton County Racing Club will be held on Saturday of next week. Owners have made a very disappointing response in the principal event, for which Beau Geste, Glenrowan and High Court are the only nominations. All the other races have filled well, however, and the meeting should provide some very interesting sport. According to Auckland reports. Chief Joy, a member of J. T. Jamieson’s team, looks a likely maiden. lie is galloping very pleasingly. He is a brother to Polyxenrf, and was sold by T. T. Jamieson to Mr E. R. Davis, in whose interests he races.
