I DEPARTMENT MUST PAY FOR NEGLECT OF PUPS.
Per Press Association WELLINGTON, November 24. Damages amounting to £4O were awarded 11. W. Watson, of Palmerston North, in a case against the Stock Department for failure to give proper food : and attention to a Cairn terrier bitch : and puppies while the)- were in quarani tine on Somes Island. The animals were received from England in good condi- '< tion, and were released from quarantine 1 suffering from eczema, rickets and other troubles due to xnal-nutrition. The Department denied neglect, but admitted that the pups were supplied with no solid food, but fed entirely on milk. The Magistrate discounted the idea that the pups’ condition was due to inherited effects, and found that the Department was liable for the consequences of neglect.
