POPULARITY OF ARTHUR’S PASS.

many visitors are EXPECTED THIS SEASON.

Arthur’s Pass is likely to prove a popular resort for visitors during the coming summer, and already quite a number of inquiries for new hut sites have been received by the National Park Board. Mr W. Stewart, Commissioner of Crown Lands for Canterbury, who is chairman of the National Park Board, stated to-day that now that the snow was clearing away a start would be made with the work of making new tracks for climbers and improving the existing tracks. The matter was in the hands of the Grounds Committee which had been authorised to expend a certain amount of money on work which was likely to increase the popularity of the park. Mr James M’Kay, a retired Government surveyer, has undertaken to carry out the surveys for the tracks, and it is hoped to decide on permanent grades for all the tracks.

The board has now been given control over the area on which the huts have been built, and it is in a position to deal with applications for new sites. The aim of the board, said Mr Stewart, was to do everything possible within the limits of its finance to improve the park and increase its popularity with visitors. The coming summer season gave every indication of being a particularly successful one. and a iarge influx of visitors was expected.
