WANDERING STOCK DO MUCH DAMAGE.
RIVER TRUST FOREMAN LAYS INFORMATION.
In the Magistrate’s Court at Rang!ora to-day, George Murfitt was charged that on October 5 at Rangiora, he damaged the work at the Ashley River Trust by permitting three horses to wander on the river-bed and eat willows planted for protective purposes. Defendant did not appear. Mr F. W. Johnston, who appeared for the inofrmant (H. Quinney, foreman for the trust) said the information was laid under Section 13 of the Ashley River Improvement Act, 1925. Evidence was given by the foreman, who said that in various parts of the district th edamage caused by stock had cost the trust several hundred pounds.
In entering a conviction, the Magistrate said that the heavy penalty of £SOO was provided under the Act," but a sthis was the first prosecution under the section, defendant twould be fined £2, with 12s costs, £2 2s solicitor’s fees, and 7s witness’s expenses.
