COAL FREIGHT CHARGES INCREASED TO OXFORD.
The closing of the Bexley and View Hill branch line has had the effect of increasing the freight on coal to the Oxford district. Formerly coal and goods from the West Coast consigned to the Eyre ton and Oxford districts were sent through Sheffield, but the closing of the Bexlev line has made it necessary for goods to be hauled over the longer route through Rolleston and Addington, with a proportionate increase in rate?.’ Coal is now’ five shillings a ton dearer in Oxford than formerly. Other commodities railed from the coast are also dearer. Coal companies complain that they had no notification that the closing of the branch, line would result in higher freight charges, and, having sold a considerable amount forward, they have suffered a considerable loss.
