COMPETITIONS.

Three hundred and eighty entries in forty classes was the creditable response to the South Canterbury centre of the New Zealand Piping and Dancing Association’s effort to revive competitions in South Canterbury. The objects of the society are to encourage national dancing and piping, but this year, in view of the defunction of the Timaru Competitions Society, the piping and dancing cente decided to cater for sections outside their usual sphere, such as vocal, instrumental, elocutionary and fancy dancing items. The entries came from Ashburton to Oamaru, and there was a good audience present at the initial opening last night. Credit is due to the secretary (Mr W. S. Burns) and members of the centre for their efforts in reviving amateur competitions. The judges were:—National dancing, Mr W. H. Bell: fancy dancing. Mr IV. S- Burns; elocution, Mr A. E. Lawrence. The results wore as follows: Highland Fling, under eight, local (4 entries) —Dorothy Lyne J, Maureen Kyle 2. Sailor’s Hornpipe, under twelve, local (9) —Orma Ford 1, Kathleen Plaver 2, Shona Oliphant 3. Highland Fling, under ten, local (7)— Rena Jacobs 1, Shona Oliphant 2.
