TELEPHONES FOR SHIPS' USE ARE NOW AVAILABLE
Telephone connections for the use of ships visiting Lyttelton, mainly oversea vessels, which have been installed by the Post and Telegraph Department for the Lyttelton Harbour Board, are now available. Anyone in Christchurch wishing to talk direct with the ship will have to ring “information”, and will then be supplied with the number which the ship is using. After that, the caller will simply dial direct to get his connection through. Street Lighting Proposal. It is reported that the special subcommittee set up bj- the Lyttelton Borough Council to go into the question of street lighting has decided that nothing can be done in the matter at the present time. The committee met on Monday night and decided to put into commission one of the large gas engines at the Exeter Street pumping station for pumping work, and, in view of the large saving in electric power thus effected, to light the streets for two hours nightly. The proposal was put before the Power Conference Committee in Christchurch on Tuesday, but that committee would not consent to the proposal on the ground that any attempt at street lighting would cause private consumers to relax their economies. The sub-committee subsequently met and decided not to proceed with the proposal, and to continue pumping with electric power. Firemen’s Competitions. A team of six firemen, members of the Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade, will take part in the inter-borough competitions at New Brighton to-morrow. New Brighton, Sumner and Lyttelton will be represented. The competition will consist of a five-men reel event, five-men flat, three-men flat, two-men coupling and one-man coupling. The last-mentioned competition is for a cup presented by Ex-Fireman W. Hall, of the Christchurch Railways Fire Brigade.
