CHINESE CELEBRATE THE “DOUBLE TENTH.”

HOLD ANNUAL SPORTS AT ENGLISH PARK TO-DAY

The greater part of the Chinese population of Christchurch assembled at English Park this afternoon for their annual sports meeting. This event is part of the celebrations in connection with the “Double Tenth,” the anniversary of the establishment of the Chinese Republic and the overthrow of the Manchu dynasty. The gate takings will be given to the Christchurch Hospital. Before the events, the Chinese were addressed by various officials in thenown language. They had assembled in the open under a banner and the Union Jack and National flags. The men were clad in various articles of athletic attire, but rain and wind from the south-west caused some to take shelter. The others stood their ground and listened to an address on the history of the Republic and the achievements of Dr Sun Yat Sen, the principal figure in the revolution. The remarks were later translated by an interpreter. A number of Europeans attended to witness the events. The rain ceased prior to the commencement of the meeting, and some amusing races were witnessed, the competitors enjoying themselves thoroughly, especially in the three-legged race. Following were the results:— Three-legged Race—George Ah Chang and George Yee 1, Kwok brothers 2. Backward Race—Harry Kwok 1 Arthur Yee 2. Running Race—Harry Kwok 1. F Floy 2. Thread-the-needle Race—Harrv Kwok 1, George Yee 2.
