AUCKLAND HAS NOT ASKED FOR MORE

NEWSPAPER REPLIES TO DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION

(Special to the “Star.”) AUCKLAND. August 21

If the course of an editorial on the Education Report, the “Star” calls attention to a portion of the evidence given by the Director of Education before the Education Committee. Mi T. B. Strong said that Auckland was developing a School of Engineering “in rivalry to the long-established School

of Engineering at Canterbury College,” also that “Auckland is reaching out to establish a Medical School, notwithstanding that there is a Medical School of long standing at Otago Varsity quite capable of training all the medical men required in the Dominion.”

The “Star” says that Air Strong completely'- misrepresents the case by his implication that Auckland has deliberately entered upon a campaign of competition against Otago and Canterbury with the object of supplanting their special schools with schools of Auckland's own.

“The truth as regards the engineering school is that Auckland had to struggle for many years for the recognition of the facilities provided to enable students to take a part course in engineering to save students from the heavy expense of a full term at Christchurch, and Auckland has not asked for more. As to medicine, there has never been any attempt to establish a medical school in Auckland.”
