FARMER FINED £25 IN TIMARU COURT.
HAD SHEEPSKINS FROM WHICH EARS WERE CUT. (Special to “Star.) ■ TIMARU, August 21. After a lengthy trial at the last session of the Supreme Court, Henry Lawsbn Brown, a farmer at Pleasant Point, was found not guilty of sheep stealing. At the Magistrate's Court to-day, Brown was charged with having in his possession four skins from which the ears had been removed. A fine of £25 and costs was imposed bv Mr C. R. Orr-Walker, S.M. Commenting on the remarks of counsel, Mr L. M. Inglis, that the jury at the trial accepted the defence that some maliciously-minded person had placed the skins on Brown's place, the Magistrate* said that it was not for anyone to presume the jury’s reasons for finding him not guilty. If it was actual!the case it was surprising that Brown himself did not appear and' fight the case out to the bitter end. Brown did not seem' prepared to set up that defence before him. A plea of guilty was entered by counsel to-day. Brown did not appear.
