FOOTBALL PLAYER’S DEATH FROM INJURY.
ASHBURTON FIXTURES HAVE BEEN POSTPONED.
The esteem in which the late James Farr, (son of Mrs and the late Mr E. Farr, Oamaru), who died on Saturday night as the result of injuries received in the senior Rugby match between Old Boys and Mayfield was held, was exemplified by the large number of Ashburton residents who assembled at the residence of Mr R. J. Laurenson, Alford Forest Road, yesterday, to pay their last respects. A service was con ducted by the Rev R. B. Tinsley, aftei which the body was removed by motor to Oamaru. The pall-bearers were: Messrs M. C. Segers (representing the Old Boys’ Club), J. Smith (Allenton), 11. D. Johnston (Rakaia), R. H. Loy (Methven), D. lieenan (Mayfield), J. C. C. M'Lachlan (Hinds) and 11. J. Chapman (Hampstead). The funeral will take place at Oamaru to-day, when a number of Ashburton residents will attend, including members of the executive of the Ashburtoii Rugby Union and Old Boys and other clubs.
At a meeting of the Ashburton Rugby Union last evening, the president, Mr S. Sullivan, referred to the tragic circumstances of the death of the late Mr Farr. He had been held in high esteem by the union and club members generally.
Mr 11. Sarnev said that the conduct of deceased both on and oil the field had been exemplary. Other members also paid tributes to his ability as a footballer and the line spirit which characterised his actions throughout.
A motion of sympathy with his relatives was passed. As a mark of respect, the meeting was adjourned, and it was decided to postpone all Rugby fixtures next Saturday.
