ENGLISHMEN WIN LONG DISTANCE FOOT RACE

Arthur Newton (South Africa) and Peter Gavuzzi (England) won the international foot relay race of 500 miles, the last lap of which was run to-day. The total time was 4S hours 4 minutes. The American team, J. W. Ray and Johnny Salo, were second, 50 hours 24 minutes.
The English pair are well-known long-distance runners, who have competed a number of times in such races as the American Coast-to-Coast Marathon. a race that usually takes about three months to finish. Last year, Gavuzzi, who is an Italian born in Southampton, came second in that
The Americans are equally well known in athletic circles. Ray at one time held the world championship for the mile, and last year won the Marathon race at the Tailteann Games, the Irish championships. Johnny Salo. who comes from Passic, New Jersey, beat Gavuzzi by four minutes in last year’s Coast-to-Ccast Marathon.
