CONGRATULATIONS FOR AIR RACE WINNERS.

BRITISH VICTORS ARE CHEERED BY GERMANS. (United Press Assn.—By Electric Tel egra pli—Copy righ t.) [(Received July*- 29, noon.) RUGBY, July 28. Mr Sempille, President of the Roy’al Aeronautical Society, has sent the fol- ! lowing telegram to Mr Alan Butler:— “Very warmest congratulations from the Royal Aeronautical Society on the splendid flight round Europe accomplished by Captain Broad and yourself, and other British competitors under exceptionally unfavourable weather conditions.” Bands played “God Save the King” and “Rule Britannia,” and a large crowd cheered when the ’planes arrived. They were the first of sixty*eight aeroplanes in the 4650 miles round-Europe international air contest, and both airmen were flying Gipsy Moth machines. The third to arrive was Thorn, in an Avro-Avian, landing a few minutes after the other competitors had arrived. Butler had bad luck a* Posen, which may possibly involve his disqualification. tie landed perfectly, but while ! taxi-ing his W’heels stuck into a wet patch of ground and the machine turned on to its nose, smashing the propeller. Later arrivals were warned off this patch. Butler was sent another propellor from Berlin, which enabled him. to continue. It is expected that Broad and Thorn will have obtained full marks for speed, for which 200 points out of the 600 are awarded. Technical tests which have to lie undertaken are for the remainder of the marks. British flying circles are particularly pleased at the manner in which British pilots and machines have held the lead throughout the event.

Carberry. another British competi tor, reached Berlin this morning.
