CHEQUE FROM DEBTOR ACCOMPANIED BY VERSE.

Four lines of verse accompanied a cheque for overdue rent received by the Selwyn Plantations Board from one of its tenants recently. The Board had occasion to threaten the tenant with Court proceedings, but a few clays before the case was to come off, the rent was sent in, with the following poem: “ The race is not always to the swift, Nor the battle to the strong. Nor riches to men of understanding, But time and chance happen to all.” There was a hearty laugh when the letter was read among the correspondence dealt with at to-day's meeting of the Board.
