“ JONES WAS HARD UP AT THE TIME.”
CHARGED WITH THEFT FROM CITY PREMISES
The excuse that he was hard up at the time was advanced by Thomas Henry Jones, aged 31, a labourer, when he appeared before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., this morning, charged with the theft on June 15 of three rolls of brake lining valued at £ls, the property of Alfred Willoughby. The accused pleaded guilty. lie was remanded till Thursday nexc to enable the Probation Officer to make a report. Chief-Detective Carroll said that the accused stole the three rolls while in the employ of Mr Willoughby. The accused sold the goods to a man who, in turn, sold them to someone else. The police, however, had recovered the stolen property. The Chief-Detective suggested that the accused should be remanded till Thursday for sentence, to allow some enquiries to be made. “ I am very sorry,” Jones told the Court; “I was hard up at the time. I have never been in trouble before and if you give me a chance I will repay the money.” The accused was remanded till Thursday. Bail was allowed, self in the sum of £SO and one surety of £SO.
