CHATHAM CUP FINAL IS WON BY WESTERN. Western, ,by defeating Thistle by three goals to two in the Canterbury final, won the right to contest the South Island final of the Chatham Cup. The match, which was played at English Park before a fair attendance, was easily the best display of football given this year. Western began at a terrific pace, piling on three goals in fifteen minutes. Then some illegal tactics began in the forwards and did not cease until a man had been ordered off. G. Thompson, a Western player, was the man who caught the referee's eye. With only ten men Western still outplayed Thistle. The winning team were: — Goal, G. Colville; backs, W. Kelly, E. Colville; halves, A. Ellis, W. Whittington, A. M’Millan; forwards, G. Thompson, T. Nelson, C. Falloon, S. Ellis, F. Bridgens. Roberts, centre half, and Wicks, left back’ were unable to play owing to injuries received last Saturday. Three matches in the Hurley Shield series were played, Rangers and Nomads meeting at Hagley Park, Kaiapoi and New Brighton at Kaiapoi, and Sumner and Technical at Ensor’s Road. THISTLE V. WESTERN.

Thistle kicked off against the sun, and in the first movement of the game J. Speirs, Thistle’s outside right, received a cut over the eye. He returned to the field later. From the throwin Thistle attacked like lightning, E. Colville getting the ball away from D. Sutherland and Trotter only just in time. Western won a corner, Whittington heading the ball over the bar. A. Ellis sent the ball up from the left, and bustling play by the forwards saw C. Falloon net. Western 1, Thistle 0. In another open forward movement,; in which Nelson and Falloon were prominent. Western left Thistle standing and Falloon goaled again. Western 2, Thistle 0. Within a minute’s time Western opened up play again, Whittington starting a movement from which T. Nelson netted. Western 3, Thistle 0. Twice Thistle were right into Western’s goal, E. Colville each time clearing. From half-way Western swooped down, and 11. Johnston saved by booting out at his own corner. Speirs, whom injury seemed to have enlivened, was playing a magnificent game, but Thistle gave him little support. Play hung at half-way until Western worried downfield again, the movement ending when G. Thompson’s centre went astray. As the culmination to some over-willing work in the forwards G. Thompson, Western’s outside left, was sent off the field for - alleged rough play. Thistle were on the attack immediately, but the attack was repelled, and in a few seconds they were hard put to it to keep Western out. Two free kicks were given, one to either side. For a few minutes it seemed as if there would be more ordering-offs, but both sides settled down again. A. Walker put Clements in. possession, and Speirs, getting the ball, had an unsuccessful attempt. Western’s keeper was immediately drawn from the other wing by G. Walker. A Western attack went the length of the field, G. Sutherland saving the Thistle keeper from Nelson and then S. Ellis. The defence of the Thistle backs was fast improving, and Western, though keeping the ball continuously in play, were not now finding an open w.ay to the goal. A dash by Trotter, continued.. by Speirs, took Thistle out of their own territory, and G. Colville cleared from a long shot, but Western drove them back again. Thistle were keeping possession of the ball, giving Trotter a good scoring chance, which G. Colville stopped. A. Sutherland, D. Sutherland ancl Trotter made an attack, E. Colville sending play back, and then the whistle called half-time on what, so far, had been far and away the best match of the year, with "the score: Western 3, Thistle 0. SECOND SPELL. The second spell began as swiftly as the first. Western, with the sun low in their faces, attacking for Bridgens to shoot just a little wide. A dribbling rush drew Gwillam again. Thistle camped in front of Western’s goal and then the Black forwards went the length of the field in a single movement and were as quickly on defence again. Success came Thistle’s way when A. Sutherland set their forwards going ancl Trotter ran on and goaled. Western 3, Thistle 1. Luck mainly saved Western’s goal a minute later. Willing play began again, and barrackers for both sides were shouting to the referee to give penalties and put men off. Territorially Thistle were on top, until Bridgens and S. Ellis swept away, giving Gwillam a bad moment. The Thistle defence was penalised and was all out to keep Western from scoring. After some quiet play, Western, in spite of being a man short, opened out and ran through the opposition again and again, free use of weight by the defence keeping them out. With a quarter of an hour to go, Thistle tried to force the pace, but Western rose to the occasion, E. Colville defending magnificently and A. Ellis being prominent in sending the forwards away on atack. Trotter made a good shot, just a little wide. Penalties were given against both sides and D. Sutherland shot into G. Colville’s arms from far out. The Thistle forwards made an open rush, G. Colville came out to meet them, lost the ball, ancl Trotter netted. Western 3, Thistle 2. Western were penalised in front of their goal, G. Colville clearing smartly. The referee gave a warning to a group of forwards, and as play began again time was called with the score: WESTERN ; 3 THISTLE 2 Referee: Mr A. Howarth. KAIAPOI V. BRIGHTON. At Kaiapoi to-day, Kaiapoi beat New Brip.liton by 4 goals to 2. For Kaiapoi, goals were shot by Noble, Wells, lies anrl M’Cullough. The scorers for New Brighton were Smitl* and Allen. NOMADS V. RANGERS. The game between Nomads and Hangers at Hagley Park was verv even in the first spell, though a trifle willing. Both sets of forwards combined well, but the defensive play of the backs was good enough to keep the score down. Nomads scored in the first spell. Pickup putting through from close in. There were several “incidents” during the first spell, especially noticeable being a meeting between A. Wilson, a Rangers forward, and one oi the Nomads backs. A melee occurred, but the referee and other players Intervened before the matter went any further. The score at half-time was: Nomads 1, Hangers 0. Hangers played dashingly at the start of the second spell, their forwards keeping up a strong attack. After the Nomads goalie had knocked clear, Windley drevo in with a beautiful angle Nomads 1. Hangers 1. A few for the Nomads goalie running too far. From the resulting scramble, 1

Tozer second and H. Graham third. A. D. Kane’s time was 53min. C. Morgan put Hangers ahead. Rangers 2, Nomads 1. Hangers had the better of tlie remaining play. Final score:— KANGBUS 2 NOMADS 1 Referee: Mr J. Cawtheray.
