STREET COLLECTION HELD FOR CANCER CAMPAIGN.
Little white badges bearing scarlet letters appeared everywhere in the city this morning. This was the emblem chosen by the women’s committee for the Cancer Campaign when they held their street collection to-day. An enthusiastic committee, of whom the Mayoress, Mrs J. K. Archer, is the chairwoman, have been working hard for several weeks past in an endeavour to raise a large sum for this fund. Through their untiring efforts it is expected that there will be a warm-hearted response to the collectors’ appeal to-day. A large number of badges had been sold by midday. To further augment the fund, a marquee and stalls were erected in Victoria Square for the purpose of selling cakes, fruit and produce. Those in charge of the stalls were Mesdames H. Wales, P. S. Foster, E. C. Hayes, J. W. Crawshaw and E. J. Cooke. Children from the Ilarewood School, under the leadership of the headmaster, Mr Newlands, had also contributed to these stalls. The headquarters for the day were the City Council Chambers, where the following helpers were in charge: Mesdames J. K. Archer, J. K. Macdonald, Langran, Edginton, Ferguson, Blake, Tomlinson, J. S.
