True Blood Wins Well In Parliamentary Handicap.

BACKERS HAVE SUCCESSFUL DAY AT WELLINGTON CLUB’S MEETING. (Special to the “ Star.”) WELLINGTON, July 10. r H ‘'HE WEATHER was cold and also showery for the second day of the Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting. The track was heavier than on Tuesday, but even then was not so muddy as is usual in July. The programme, consisting mostly of hack events, provided some interesting sport. Form worked out well, and backers picked most of the races well. The tote turnover was £38,572 against £41,086 for the second day last year.

The Hurdles. Racing opened with the Corunna Hurdles, which attracted a field of eight, Zippor being the only scratching. Avro was a pronounced favourite, with Mountain Guide easily second fancy. Paris led to the first hurdle, where a bad jump caused him to lose his place. Deluge led Avro and Make Up out of the straight with Dobbin heading the others, Paris being a long way back. Avro took charge at the five-furlong post, and a little further on Make Up ran into second place. These two were together at the home turn, followed by Deluge, with Mountain Guide not far away and Paris starting to move up. Avro was out clear at the entrance to the straight. Paris, who finished well, was three lengths away, getting up in time to beat Deluge by half a length. Daylight was fifth. Opa tailed off most of the way and Dobbin also ran badly. Paris jumped patchily, losing ground at several hurdles, but went well on the flat. Make Up, with no previous experience, put up a good performance. Avro went solidly, but his jumping is not perfect yet. Premising Sprinter. Air Laddie was scratched for the Trial Plate, leaving a field of twentyone. Coon Song, Ganpat and Aricus were heavily backed in that order. Aricus, ridden by H. Gray, started from the outside position, and when the barrier rose he whipped round, losing fifty yards. Ganpat, also starting wide out, never became prominent. Coon Song, on the other hand, was always one of the leaders. His colours showed out early, as- did those of Vaniyke, Prince Desmond and Intruder, facing for the course proper. Coon ; ong was oiit clear with Vandyke, Terra Firma, Jayson and Rosshire showing up in the next bunch, while Desert Song was done with a little further on. Coon Song was well clear a furlong from the post and though Rosshire finished strongly, Coon Song beat him easily by two lengths, while three lengths further back Terra Firma and Jayson finished on together and ran a dead heat for third. Pass Or, Win Acre, Vandyke, Prince Desmond and Dunraven were next. The winner confirmed his smart winning form of the first day and looks like making a good sprinter. Desert Song failed to remain at the end, but Dunraven registered a fair performance. Town Major’s Impressive Win. The withdrawal of Bonacre left thirteen runners for the Seatoun Handicap. Town Major was favourite, but with only a slight call over Snow Prince and The Warden, while several others were well supported. Brilliant Light was first out, followed by Snow Prince, who took charge after going a furlong. Then Semper Paratus ran into second place with Malahat, Brilliant Light and Tahoma next. Semper Paratus joined Snow Prince in the lead at the half mile post, wifh Malahat, Tahoma, The Warden, Lucretia and Brilliant Light following. Snow Prince and Semper Paratus led to the straight, where Tahoma, The Warden and Town Major were prominent in the next bunch. The leading pair retired a little further on, both of them appearing to be crowded by the horses on the outside. Town Major then • hot to the front to beat Tahoma easily by two lengths. Malahat was a similar distance away, followed by The Warden, Brilliant Light end Disrank at intervals. The winner’s performance was impressive. After jumping out well he seemed to meet trouble, but he finished in great style . Tahoma ran the journey out well after being prominent all the way. The Warden had every chance. Snow Prince and Semper Paratus stopped rather disappointingly. Hack Steeples. The scratching of Wyeford left six starters for the Mariri Hack Steeplechase. Hymestrason was a pronounced favourite, with Sir Moment and Corneroff evenly fanced after a gap. I Hymestrason began slowly, the others! being bunched as they ran to the first j fence, where Corneroff and Waitau-i naha took charge. High Heather refused at the next fence, the sod wall. Waitaunaha and Corneroff continued in lront for the next half mile, but on reaching the straight Corneroff and Sir Moment were showing the way, with Hymestrason moving up. These three were together at the stand double. Hymestrason slipped after jumping te fence before the mile post, but soon recovered and at the sod wall he jumped to the front, with Sir Moment and Corneroff leading Taramoa and Waitaunaha, who were close up. There was not much change to the second, last fence, where Hymestrason drew away several lengths from Corneroff. The leader screwed at the last fence, but went on to win by a length from Corneroff, who beat Sir Moment by two lengths, while Taramoa and Waitaunaha were eight lengths further back. The winner’s performance was very attractive as he never looked like losing over the last seven furlongs He showed signs of lameness after the race, but this is not regarded seriously and he will win more steeplechases in better company if he keeps sound. Corneroff ran a sound race, and Taramna went fairly well all through.

True Blood Runs Solidly. Courageous was the only scratching for the Parliamentary Handicap. In a field of ten High Pitch was always a little better backed than True Blood and Mendip. The start was unfortunate, Marjoram being left turned sideways. Black Mint led out of the straight, while Blimp ran past him, with High Pitch, Best Friend and Taboo next. Taboo took charge at the seven furlong post, with . Blimp, Best Friend and True Blood in close attendance. True Blood took second place approaching the five furlong post, where Mendip moved up to third. A little further on True Blood ran to the front, with Taboo and Mendip next. This was the order at the home turn, where Black Duke also joined in. while High Pitch and Blimp were handy. Taboo was in trouble when the straight was reached, and at the false rail True Blood, Mendip and Black Duke were almost in line. Black Duke was beaten a little further on, and True Blood stayed on to win by a length from Mendip, who beat Black Duke by over a length. Blimp and High Pitch were next, just in front of Taboo. The winner was unlucky on the first day when he was left at the post in the Whyte Handicap. He is a solid customer and he stayed the going out well. Mendip also ran a good race. Black Duke found the going a trifle too long, while Taboo was in trouble after going a mile. Best Friend was a disappointment and apparently the first day’s run was enough for him. An Easy Victory.

The nine acceptants lined tip for the High-weight Handicap. Luminary was a warm favourite, with Mount Shannon easily second fancy. Troilus took charge at the start, leading Luminary, The Sun, Prince Lu and Carinthia out of the straight. There was not much change for the first six furlongs, when Mount Shannon made a forward move. Luminary retired at the home turn. Mount Shannon was second at this stage, and, going to the front at the entrance to the straight, he won with ridiculous ease by five lengths from Courageous, who moved up before the straight was reached. Fine Acre, after being last in the early stages, finished on well to get third. The Sun and Carinthia were next, followed by Troilus, who faded out badly in the straight. The winner has been a failure so far, but looks as if he is going to make a good horse now that he has struck form. Troilus went well till two furlongs from home, after which he collapsed. Luminary, after being well placed for about a mile, shut up very quickly. His was a very disappointing effort for a horse backed so confidently. Stagliunter Improves.

There was no scratching for the Members’ Handicap, a field of fourteen smart sprinters taking part. Hopwood, Havering and Paiko were heavily supported. Havering, from the outside, began very fast and soon was showing in the front division much nearer the rails, while Hopwood, Staghunter, Marble King and Rascal were others prominent. Staghunter and Havering were in charge racing on to the course proper, with Hopwood, Paiko, Rascal and Marble King also showing up. Havering and Staghunter were out. clear at the distance, and a little further on Hopwood moved up with a fast run. An exciting finish ended in Staghunter beating Havering by half a head after . the pair had been locked together for the final furlong. Hopwood was half a length away, and ran a great race after having to change his line in the closing stages. Paiko was going on well in fourth place, with Rascal, Lady’s‘Boy, Chopin and Marble King following in that order. Rascal could not quite hold his place in the middle stages, but ran a good race. Hopwood, however, was the unlucky horse Havering showed great brilliance out from the barrier and finished on well. Staghunter was responsible for a good performance, improving a lot on his first day effort, which disappointed his connections. Having struck form again, he may win more races. A Hct Favourite. The day’s racing concluded with the Petone Handicap, for which the nine acceptors lined up. Portray was a hot favourite, with Glenrossie easily second fanev. The colours of Portray and Abbey Queen were prominent early but. at the end of a furlong Glenrossie wars in charge, with White Doe, Hurly Burly, Portray and Killigrew handy. Portray led on to the course proper from Killigrew and Abbey Queen, with Glenrossie and White Doe also showing up. Portray was out clear a furlong from the post and won with great ease by two lengths from Abbey Queen, with Killigrew half a length away, a head in front, of Glenrossie, while White Doe and Hurly Burly were next. Form pointed strongly to Portray, who is a smart three-year-old liable to win good open sprints next season. Hurly Burly, on the outside, ran a fair race, but never looked like being in the money after going two furlongs.
