WAIMAKARIRI BRIDGE IS NEARLY COMPLETED.
The new bridge over the Waimakariri River is completed except for painting and should be ready for traffic within a month. A statement to this effect was made in the report sumitted to the Waimakariri River Trust yesterday afternoon by the resident engineer (Mr IT. W. Harris). After a short discussion a special sub-commit-tee, consisting of the chairman (Mr J. Wood), Sir Francis Boys, Mr W. P Spencer, the engineer and the secretary (Mr C. W. Hervey), was set up to arrange a suitable public function. The report stated that a tender had been let for the bitumen surface and the engineer understood that the contractor* would be ready to start in about a fortnight. The most dangerous point along the new banks was at Gregg's Drain Road, which should be closed up as early as possible; it would be necessary to get oermission from the Eyre County Council to do this, as the traffic would have to be diverted vra the new fortyfoot road along the embankments, pending the council opening up the new Clarkville Road.
