VATICAN NOT READY TO FULFIL CONDITIONS
MAINTAINS STAND . ON RELIGIOUS ISSUE. (United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, July 9. The correspondent of “The Times” at Malta, says that it is evident that the Holy See has no present intention of fulfilling the conditions which the British Government declare to be indispensable for the resumption of full diplomatic relations. The Vatican’s official organ “Osservatore Romano” * publishes a long article, the gist of which. is a denial that there has been undue-interference on the part of the bishops of Malta in party politics. The article maintains that the bishops had the right and the duty to warn the electors against Lord Strickland’s pretensions to be persona grata with the Vatican, and it insists upon the maintenance of the guarantees for the defence of the Catholic religion that were given when the British Government first obtained possession of the island.
