SHEEP DAMAGE YOUNG TREES NEAR WAIMAK.
Complaint of damage done to trees along the banks of the Eyre River by sheep turned in to graze, was made in a report submitted to the Waimakariri River Trust yesterday by the Resident Engineer (Mr If. W. Harris). He said that the main offender had been warned on several occasions and once had his sheep impounded. On June 30, ISO of this man’s sheep were taken possession of. They had done further damage by eating off the new shoots of the young pine trees. “It is very hard to estimate the amount of damage we have suffered,” continued the report, “but it is most regrettable ' that we should be up against this sort of thing from the people to whom we are affording protection from the river.
®mm m is m ® m m m mm ® mmm a m mm I do not like recommending the trust to take any ratepayer to Court, but steps must be taken to prevent this trespass and damage being repeated after adequate warning has been given.” It was resolved to instruct the trust’s solicitors to write to the sheepowner concerned stating that proceedings would be taken if he offended again.
