Sympathy Quickens The Mind.
A Woman’s View .
W IIEN accidents occur, men usuallycome forward with offers of assistance, as they did at Arthur’s Pass yesterday. They were the stretcher bearers ; but it was a young woman who made the stretcher by sewing a quilt to some skins and a couple of posts. Though women may not always have the strength to offer what seems the most needed help, it is at least satisfying to remember that their resourcefulness often supplies the very thing that renders a makeshift endurable. Perhaps it is because women have to fight the old enemy Pain more frequently than men, that their minds take such a rapid survey of the situation to build their soft defences. Sympathy quickens the heart, and the mind, too. If we lack physical courage it is often just because we have the keener perception that comes with hours of pain. I wonder if suffering can teach women too much? B.E.S.
