FAST JUMPING BY FLYING SWIFT.

DISAPPOINTING FIELD IN HURDLE RACE.

(Special to the ** Star **) NAPIER. June 28.

The Napier Park meeting was con:luded to-day in fine but cold weather. The track again was in excellent order

Flying Swift’s Great Display.

Probably the best display of fast jumping combined with a sustained run set for a long time was that given by Flying Swift when he won the Park Steeplechase. Wyeford went out to set a terrific pace and was easily ten lengths clear of the second horse at one stage, while Flying Swift was in rear of a strung-out field. A little more than a mile from home Flying Swift started a run which took him to Wyeford at the last fence and the rest was easy Certainly Wyeford was tiring. but the way Flying Swift sailed past horse after horse, taking his fence? in his stride, stamped him as a really good horse. He is well worthy of his Grand National nomination. He was favourite for his race on Saturday, with Red Bank more in demand than Brigadier Bill. Wyeford’s nearest attendants in the early stages, after Handy had been forced off by the erratic Wyeford at the first of the stand double were Red Bank and Master Arch, then coming at intervals Timipouri, Brigadier Bill, Wharncliffe and Flying Swift Master Arch lost his rider at the first fence in the straight and after the stand double was crossed Red B.ank. Brigadier Bill and Timi pouri just led Flying Swift, with Wveford still many lengths in front of all Flying Swift then unwound his run Brigadier Bill hitting a fence hard when attempting to go with him. and Flying Swift caught and beat Wyeford home by six lengths. Wharncliffe. wh« had been with Flying Swift in the early stages, was galloping strongly in third place. six* lengths back. Then came Brigadier Bill. Timipouri and Bank at intervals. Wharncliffe’s effort was an outstanding one. Ridden by an amateur he gave a smooth display without anv great assistance from his rider Bv the wav he jumps and gallops a good race looks sure to come his way before very long Wyeford is erratic, but cleared his fences without trouble. Timipouri did not jump well while the rider of Handy asked for trouble in ranging up on the outside of Wveford racing at the double. It is seldom that only two horses start in a handicap in New Zealand but this was the state, of affairs when the Poraite Hurdles came up for de -ision,. Rakauponga naturally was at edds-on but the price was reasonable His opponent, Kalakaua, jumped out first and ranged up with him in the middle stages, but from then on Rakau uonga came on to win as he liked by six lengths.

A rise of 141 b did not stop backers from making Lyn Dhu favourite for the Waiohiki Hurdles or from his winning the race. The Masher was slow. High Society and Deluge led over the first obstacle. Lin Arlington took a turn at pacemaking for a few furlongs, with High Society leading the others in close order. Lyn Dhu and High Society rushed to the front at the half-mile and stayed togethei to the last fence, from which point Lyn Dhu drew away to beat High Society by two lengths, with Deluge four lengths back ahead of The Masher. Lyn Dhu jumped well and outpaced he opposition. High Society and Deluge ran up to form. The Masher has improved. Those who laid the odds on Blue Paper in the Greenmeadows Hark Handicap were left with the tickets even though she received all the best of the jump-out. Arrowzone soon join ed Blue Paper in the lead from Arrowhead and Taranto. Taranto was up with the two leaders at the turn, with Arrowhead coming through on the -ails. Blue Paper dropped out of the "nal nearing the post. Taranto •’inning bv a length and a half from \rrowhead, who beat Blue Paper by three-quarters of a length. Lady Spy and Arrowzone followed at intervals Taranto won well and is a fair galloper

in this class Arrowhead had every chance, and Blue Paper failed under pressure. Arrowzone and Lady Spy showed some pace. A sprinter in Aston, judiciously ridden by Mr H. Dodds, was too good for the opposition in the amateur riders* race, returning a substantial double figure dividend. Aston, Whakaue and Grattus were in front from Highwayman, Blacksmith, Corneroff and Rory Mor for most of the way. Highwayman and Corneroff lost ground at the halfmie, and Aston, Whakaue and Grattus turned for home clear of Mirabiliary. Aston still had a spurt left him in and beat off a determined challenge by Grattus by a head. Rory Mor, who finished well on the rails, was half a length away third, with Mirabiliary, Whakaue and Corneroff next. The horsemanship aided Aston to win, and both Grattus and Rory Mor put up good efforts under weight. Mirabiliary did not receive a good run early and did not show the expected dash at the finish. Whakaue was not suited by the hard track. H. Goldfinch Rides a Winner. H. Goldfinch brought his first winner home after his accident some months ago when Bernera scored in the principal flat race. Bold Front was a good favourite, but although he finished well his best was a close third. Shortly jumped out first with Bernera from Goblin Market, Queen’s Choice and Paiko. Queen’s Choice and Bernera led Shortly, Paiko, Moutoa Treasury and Goblin Market at the half-mile, with Potoaform worrying up. Bernera lost his place going to the turn, where Royal Damon rushed to the front to join Queen’s Choice, then coming Po toaform, Moutoa Treasury, Goblin Market and Bernera. Royal Damon was holding the opposition until right on the post, when Bernera flashed up to win by a head from Royal Damon. Bold Front, who came solidly on the outside, was half a head away third; Moutoa Treasury, Paiko and Queen’s Choice together were next, and then came Goblin Market and Shortly. Bernera registered a solid performance, and both Royal Damon and Bold Front ran excellent races. Bold Front is improving considerably. Moutoa Treasury had every chance Potoaform and Shortly are likely winners soon. An Unlucky Favourite. Adventus had the call over Lordliko m the betting on the concluding event, but received all the ill-luck of the race and did well to finish third. Lordlike showed considerable improvement to win very decisively. Mothplane collided with Royal Songster just prior to the race, receiving an injury which compelled her withdrawal Clovne began best, but Royal Songster soon sailed to the front from Clovne. Spearform, Gold’ike and Hystride. with Adventus and Lordlike in the rear. King Manu ran up crossing the top. otherwise there was little change Royal Songster, King Manu, Clovne and Snearform were the first to turn for home. Over the last bit. however Lordlike. under pressure. dashed up in great style to win verv decisively bv a length and a half from Royal Songster with Adventus, also finishing well, a length away third. Goldlike and Hystride were next. The winner is a good galloper who stands up to vigorous riding He showed that his form on the opening day was wrong. Royal Songster is an attractive galloper who will win races. Adventus was unlucky. Goldlike, not too well ridden, ran a really good race. Glovne. King Manu and Spearform had every chance, but were not good enough.
