CANTERBURY & OTAGO HOCKEY TEAMS PLAY A DRAWN GAME.

Goal Each In Second Spell.

Scoring a goal each in the second spell, the Confer - bury and Otago hockey teams played a drawn game at Lancaster Park to-day. Canterbury retain the challenge shield.

The first match for the New Zealand Challenge Shield was played at Lancaster Park to-day. The ground was soft but otherwise in good order. The following were the teams:— Otago (Blue and Gold)—R. Twose, L. Ireland, R. Honning, G. Wilson, B. Morris, D. Gurr, L. Smith, E. Rennick, J. Watson, M. Bay and A. Baxter. Canterbury (Red and Black)—H. Snook, E. Dash, C. Rogers, B. Hore, B. Rogers, V. Wells, W. Gracie, F. Fullwood, S. Bell, W. Bell, R. Davis.

Otago broke away from the bully, but lost ground through infringements. C. Rogers stopped an Otago rush and Canterbury reached Otago’s end. B. Rogers sent Gracie away, the latter centring to S. Bell, whose shot was stopped by Twose. Canterbury pressed hard and gained two penalty corners, both of which were cleared. Otago got away, but brilliant play by C. Rogers stopped the rush. B. Hore started the Canterbury forwards going. Fullwood’s shot was smothered. Otago held play in Canterbury’s end for a spell until W. Bell cleared. Ireland hit out at half-way. S. Bell and W. Bell made an opening, and B. Rogers carried on. Honning cleared at the expense of a corner. A free hit just outside Otago’s circle gave the local team a chance, but Gurr hit over. Pretty play by Hore gave S. Bell a chance. His shot went wide. The score at half-time was: Canterbury 0, Otago 0. Second Spell.

Otago gained possession and reached Canterbury’s circle, but C. Rogers effected a clever save. B. Rogers stopped an Otago rush and sent Fullwood away. R. Davis next secured possession and went well down, but his centre missed. B. Rogers started a

pretty passing rush for Canterbury which was spoiled by an infringement. B. .Hore put Canterbury in a good position, and B. Rogers centred for Gracie to shoot unsuccessfully. Baxter got away on the left wing. B. Rogers sent the ball back to Davis, who centred to S. Bell. Bell passed to Fullwood, but,the latter’s shot was cleared. Canterbury came back and S. Bell made no mistake. Canterbury 1. Otago 0.

Canterbury had the better of the game and gained a couple of fruitless penalty corners. Otago then transferred play to the local end, where they gained a penalty corner, from which Watson scored with a lightning shot. Canterbury 1, Otago 1. F. Fullwood broke away and put in- - great solo run. Twose kicked out. Otago were combining well, but were stopped by Dash. Davis started the Canterbury forwards moving and Twose made a clever save. Baxter got away on Otago’s left wring. Hor<s hit over at the expense of a corner. Final score CANTERBURY 1 OTAGO
