POWER FAILS IN CITY; BUSINESS INTERRUPTED.
Rush-hour business was interrupted for the space of about three minutes last evening when the city was suddenly plunged in darkness through a fault developing in the underground cable from the Addington sub-station to the city converter station. It happened just on 7.15 p.m. when late shoppers for the week-end throng <jd the business places, but the failure did not affect the trams. Candles were in many cases hurriedly requisitioned but by the time they had been placed in position the need for them was over The lights flickered occasionally, show ing up the crowds on the streets in an eerie fashion, until the load was transferred to other cables and order restored. The fault had not, up till a late horn last evening, been located, but as there were sufficient cables to carry the load, no further interruption was caused. The M.E.D. staff were engaged in finding the seat of the trouble so that no more trouble wbuld be experienced.
