BUSINESS\ THE LIFE-BLOOD OF THE COMMUNITY If the world’s business could be suspended by any accident for a month, civilisation would totter, if not collapse. The business man, large or small, who helps in any .way to make or distribute the needs of life is essential to the common good. John Ruskin very rightly gives to the purveyor of honest merchandise, equal status with Soldier, Lawyer, Doctor, and Priest, since all equally contribute to the well being of the community. Except for the merchant and tradesman, in other words, were it not for business as the term is usually understood, there is no other means by which the produce of the world can be assembled and distributed to meet growing needs of peoples, whether in crowded Homeland areas or living, as in New Zealand, on the outskirts of the Empire. Business is always difficult, and in some respects more difficult in the Dominion than anywhere else. In England, should a merchant wish to buy hurriedly to meet an unexpected demand, it is safe to assume that in one round,of the clock his order could reach some large source of supply and the goods be delivered On his premises. In the Dominion the case is very different. If a merchant understocks—in overseas products—he fails to meet his clients’ needs, and 'distance forbids prompt fresh deliveries. If, on the other hand, a merchant orders too liberally, it follows that with the limited population of New Zealand, he finds himself towards the close of each season, with quantities of seasonable goods which must be cleared. Therefore a periodic Sale becomes a necessity, a legitimate safety-valve as it were, for, however judiciously buying may have been conducted, a season’s trading cannot fail to accumulate surplus stocks which must be cleared, if only to make room for the constantly incoming fresh supplies. A Genuine Sale confers a double benefit! It assists the merchant to continue an efficient, up-to-date service. It is also a real moneysaving opportunity for those who take advantage of the sales provided. Twice every year such a Sale is provided by Ballantynes, when Fashion goods are available for the immediate season’s wear, and regular, all-the-year-round Draperies are offered at Bargain Prices. When something we really desire in the prevailing mode and of assured quality can be purchased at considerably below the normal price, then it can be honestly called a bargain. Innumerable such Bargains are available throughout the Sale period, which begins on MONDAY MORNING AT
