Party Catch-cries.
To the Editor. Dear Sir,—lt was with feelings of amazement that I read the warning issued by Mr H. .D. Acland, the Tory president of the Citizens’ Association, against the danger of the people being misled by catch-cries and slogans. Somehow I cannot remember this Tory apologist uttering any protest against the catch-cries with which the electors of the Dominion were hood-winked at the 1925 general election. He was, I believe, at that time the Canterbury president of the Reform Party, and seemingly, “The Man Who Gets Things Done,” “ Coates and Confidence,” an 4 “ Give the Young New Zealander his Chance,” to mention but a few of the catch-cries that were put out in fullpage advertisements to snare the unwary voters, did not bring forth any protest from him. He was content to take all the luck that came from the use of catch-cries when it suited his purpose, but when the people are converted to another way of thinking by sound arguments he considers it his duty to warn them against catch-cries and slogans. Such is consistency.—l am. etc., OLD LIBERAL.
