Athletic Jubilee.

SSS A dinner in London on April 24 was STS the form taken to celebrate the jubilee of the English Amateur Athletic Assosr elation. Lord Desborough, the president, presided. Congratulatory mesHr sages on the long and valuable work sr of the A.A.A. were received from the associations of Ireland, United States j» and Canada. The association came into existence as the result of a meet--SKS ing of delegates from the universities SSS and the leading clubs in England, held SS in Oxford on April 24, ISSO, to discuss the advisability of the formation of a SE governing authority to control axnateur athletic sport. Of those who were SS nresent at present at that meeting, only ZZZ five are alive to-day. Referring to the SSI jubilee function, C. W Packford writes SS as follows in “Sporting Life”: A singular larly happy feature of the fifty years’ =• iact that during the whole of that time only nine men have occupied the three most important offices. These SS have been the Earl of Jersey, who held Sgr the office of president from 18S0 to Si 1891, Lord Alverstone, who then remained in office until 1916, and Sir Mon"T"“ tague Shearman, from that time until the day of his death a few months ago, when Lord Desborough was unanimously elected. Sir Montague was also honsr: orary secretary for the first four years, SS when Charles Herbert carried on until SS 1906, Percy L. Fisher to 1915, with rr£ Harry Barclay since having compiled srr a brilliant “innings” of “16 not out”. There have only been two honorary —— treasurers—C. N. Jackson, 1880 to 1910. S— and \V. M.
