SPLINTERS " COMING TO CIVIC NEXT WEEK.
So important an event is the arrival of “Splinters” in Christchurch, not only from the merits of the film itself, but also because it marks a step forward in the march of progress of British films and British trade generally. The money that this film receives goes to Britain, and not to America, and this is a point upon which too much emphasis cannot be laid With this in mind, plus the early association of many of its members, the Canterbury branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association is giving its entire, support to the “ Splinters” season at the Civic Theatre. Members will be in, force at . the Civic on the opening night, July 4, arid it is safe to say that many a member of that organisation will live over . again the humorous incidents which occurred when “ Splinters" was in the making. The name “ Splinters ” rpeans T" Fragments.” and the film is just “ Fragments from France.” It concerns the decision of the Genera! Cbrnmand of the First Army to provide entertainment for the men. behind the lines—the difficulties in securing the talent necessary, the improvised staging, costumes, theatre and all the things that are necessary for a successful company of entertainers. Then as the movement grows, we see the company in costume, magnificent ballets of beautiful “ girls.” The leading “ lady ” is Reg. Stone, claimed to be the greatest female impersonator in the world. Throughout Great Britain, Australia and wherever it has been shown so far in New Zealand—yes, and even in America—
" Splinters ” has been welcomed with open arms. It is so essentially British It is characteristic of the British nation, its people, its army, its humour, its—well, it's British, and that’s all there is about it. It’s what we. have been waiting for, and now it is coming. As the London “ Sftar ” says: " Splinters ” definitely puts Britain oh the film map.”
