Musical Criticism As It Used To Be. In Rome a century ago the critics used to sit in the front row of the audiey.ce each with a lighted candle in front of him, by means of which he read the score of the music in performance. Also, they made remarks openly on the singers. On one occasion, a critic closed his book with a snap, blew out his candle, and informed the artist on the stage in loud tones: “Sig nor. you are the worst singer who evei appeared You ought to be hooted oh the stage ” And the discomfited singer retired and was heard no more Nowadays, alas! critics may only! think these things and not say them.
