LOYAL BENEVOLENT LODGE, M.U., 1.0.0. F. The Loyal Benevolent Lodge held its usual fortnightly meeting on Monday night in St Matthew’s Schoolroom, N.G. Brother E. Lane presiding. The lodge room was draped in mourning owing to the death of PG. Brother T. Cotton, a very old member. The secretary was instructed to write a letter of condolence to the relatives of the late brother. One candidate was initiated into the order, P.G. Brothers W. B. Browne and H. Osborne acting as conductors. P.G. Brother F. Cole was appointed Precentor to instruct the lodge on ritual. A committee consisting of the officers of the lodge, the building committee and the ladies’ social committee, was set up to make arrangements for the official opening of the new lodge room. All sentiments were taken in silence. P.G. Sister Cribb responded to the Fourth Sentiment on behalf of the Loyal Sister Pearce Lodge. HOPE OF ST ALBANS, UA.O.D. The Hope of St Albans, U.A.0.D., No. 2, held its fortnightly meeting on Tuesday night, A.D. Brother Ward presiding. The following visitors were in attendance:—D.P. Brother Beckett, P.G.P. Brother J. Fisher and ‘P.A. Brother C. Dunford. Brothers Hewitt and Hammond were installed in their respective positions by the installing

officer, Brother Beckett. Two new candidates were initiated and two clearance members were accepted from the Timaru Lodge. Correspondence was received from the Ivy of Linwood Lodge with respect to a church parade. A.D. Brother Ward was appointed delegate From the No. 1 Chapter stating that P.G.P. Brother Talbot, P.A. Brother Cook and P. A. Brother Herriott had been appointed efficiency judges. P.D.P. Brother Marshall was appointed delegate to the. Ladies’ Lodge to arrange a combined visit to the Star of Anglesia Lodge. The special committee set up to consider the proposals from the Dispensary Board gave their report, which stated that the committee could see no reasoA for the lodge co-operating with the Dispensary Board to alter existing conditions with the medical officers of the lodge. The finding of the committee was unanimously adopted. The holding of a Christmas tree for the children was decided on. The district ritual competition was discussed, and a motion was carried that the lodge do not ente*- a team. The presentation to T Brother Gascoigne of a framed diploma was made by D.P. Bro Beckett, who spoke of the wo Brother Gascoigne had done for his lodge and expressed the hope that he would still maintain his interest in the friendly society movement. In thanking the D.P. and the lodge. Brother Gascoigne said that he would continue to take a keen interest in lodge work. DANCE. Another very successful dance in aid of the public swimming bath fund was held in the St Matthew’s Schoolroom on Thursday night. Mr G. T. Grover acted as M.C., and Woodward’s Orchestra supplied the music. The lucky spot was won by Miss K. Robertson and Mr C. Wright, and the Monte Carlo waltz prizes by Miss K. Carey and Mr J. Bennet. PERSONAL. Friends of Mr E. Taylor, of Sherbourne Street, will regret to learn that he is confined to his home through illness. Mr Taylor is a popular member of the St Albans Library social room. Friends of Mr W. Earwaker will be pleased to learn that he is now progressing favourably.
