WAR RELIEF FUND HAS ITS ANNUAL MEETING.

The fifteenth annual meeting of the Ashburton County War Relief Fund was held last evening, Mr A. Galbraith presiding. The balance-sheet showed that £761 had been paid out in relief during the year, making a total of £29,728 since 1915. The income last year was £947, and the expenditure £1093. The receipts, w T ith interest accrued since 1915, totalled £41,88b, while grants to soldiers amounted to £32,666, and expenses for the same period to £1671. The annual report referred to the difficulties in connection with applications from returned soldiers on account of the. unemployment problem In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the Mayor stated that the fund had been handled with a minimum of expense. The retiring members, Messrs Galbraith, Hardy and Robinson, and Colonel Findlay, were re-elected. Mr J. W. Bowden was re-appointed auditor. Motor Collision. A collision occurred at the intersection of Havelock and Walker Streets about 5 p.m. yesterday, between a car driven by Dr Wells and a butcher’s delivery van in charge of Ernest Jones. The motor-car capsized, sustaining minor damage, and the van was also damaged. No one was injured. Unlicensed Drivers. A large number of motor drivers have not yet secured their licenses, judging by this year’s returns compared with those of the previous year. In the borough last year 911 licenses were issued, and to date the total is 683, including seventy-two who recewed their tickets for the first time. The number issued last year by the county inspector was 2896, and the total so far this season is 2273, including 160 new one&

Cleaning the Ponds. The absence of water in the street channels has been noticeable for some time. This is due to the annual clean up of the ponds in the Domain and the clearing of water races leading to the borough. In the meantime water is occasionally being put into the channels from the borough high pressure supply. Critically Injured. The condition of Mr W r illiam Tutty. a married man, living on the North Belt, who sustained a fractured skull as the result of a fall from a ladder on to the concrete at the Fairfield Freezing Works on Wednesday, is still critical. Women’s Institute. A meeting was held in the Hinds Oddfellows' Hall to consider the formation of a branch of the Women’s Institute The organiser (Miss Stops) gave an address on the aims of the institute. The following were elected as officers and committee:—President. Miss Hanna; vice-president. Mrs Hall; secretary, Mrs Richard; treasurer, Mrs Tarbotton; Mesdames Frampton, Marshall and Lennie.
