CHANGE OF NAME FOR INVERCARGILL.

PRESENT ONE IS NOT VERY SATISFACTORY. Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL, May 20. The following recommendation from the Finance Committee came before the Invercargill City Council this even ing: “ That tho council take into consideration the suggvauttu tu&i. name of the city be changed from Invercargill to Cargill” Councillor 11. J. Macalister, chairman of the committee, said he knew that many would oppose the change purely from conservatism. There was ample precedent for change, both near* at hand and far distant, the speaker mentioning the change of Christiania to Oslo. He said that Invercargill was not a euphonious name, and he understood that the name was bestowed in Dunedin as a joke during a banquet at which the Superintendent, Captain Cargill, was present. The name had been put up with by Southlanders long enough. Councillor C. J. Brodrick considered it the most absurd suggestion he had ever heard. “ Invercargill is a beautiful name,” said Councillor T. O’Byrne, “ and I should be sorry to see it changed to Cargill.” The council finally decided to delete the words, “ from Invercargill to Cargill,” from the clause, and in this amended form it was adopted.
